POSTCOLONIAL DILEMMA REFLECTED IN
ARAVIND ADIGA’S THE WHITE TIGER

Abstract :
The study is the overview of ‘Postcolonialism’ as a literary movementand its theoretical
description has been presented. Postcolonialism is the critical study of the effects of
colonialism on the culture and communities of the colonized nations. Postcolonialism is
defined alongside the discussion of its features in the course of this chapter. India as a
country and its economic status in postcolonial period has also been discussed in detail.
It focuses on the characteristics of literary criticism and the core ideas of
postcolonialism. Theory of postcolonialism, its reflection in literature in context of various
domains including culture, politics, philosophy, and literary practices as well as the steps
postcolonial criticism,have been interestingly discussed. The study further covers the
biographical sketch of the author – Aravind Adiga, the plot of the novel and thematic
concerns of AravindAdiga’sBooker Prize Winner debut novel The White Tiger (2008). The
chapter also deals with different issues and political situation reflected in Aravind
Adiga’sThe White Tiger.On the basis of the everyday life in Indian society, Aravind Adiga
has highlighted India as two different faces of India: India of Prosperity and India of
Poverty. The chapter depicts social evils in Indian society through the lens of Aravind
Adiga’sThe White Tiger.
The study is devoted to critical evaluation of related literature on Aravind Adiga’sThe
White Tiger. The researcher has made careful and critical study of these sources for the
present research. These sources include research articles, critical theories on
Postcolonialism, fictional works of other authors on Postcolonialism and so on. These
sources have been critically evaluated and discussed in this chapter to prepare the
background for the proposed research.
The study aloso provides broad overview of the previous research on Aravind Adiga’sThe
White Tiger. Colonial text and literature published after colonization is discussed in
context of post-colonial theories. Some noted thinkers and theorists like Edward Said,
Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Frantz Fanon, Homi Bhabhaand others,who popularized
colonialism, have been critically evaluated for their valuable contribution.Some of the
most prominent postcolonial novels like Chinua Achebe‘s Things Fall Apart (1958), V.S
Naipaul’s A House for Mr. Biswas (1961), Mulk Raj Anand’s Untouchable (1935), have also
been critically evaluated.
