Abstract :
Present investigation was conducted to study the effectiveness of English language
competency programme with reference to some socio-psycho variables. Socio-psycho
factors i.e. area, sex and socio-economic status (SES) were considered as independent
variables while English competency was considered as dependent variable.
Total 09 main hypotheses were framed for studying the influence of three independent
variables on the dependent variable.
For the present study, std-VIII students studying during year 2015-16 in Gujarati Medium
schools of Gujarat state Education Board of Kalol taluka/ block comprises the population.
There are 161 primary schools in Kalol taluka in which 31 schools were government
schools(run by district panchayat) and 192 were self-finance(run by private trusts)
schools. All these schools were considered as population.
The researcher had purposively selected two schools: Jethlaj Primary School, Jethlaj and
Joyful International school, Kalol to conduct experiment. Then two classes in each school
were selected for experiment. Lottery sampling method was followed to select and make
two groups equal in each school. Draw was conducted to select an experimental and
control group class in each school. All the two schools were selected purposively as
these schools permitted the researcher to conduct experiment. Total 136 pupils were
taken as the sample for the present study for pre-test and post-test comprising 60 pupils
from Jethlaj Primary School, Jethlaj and 76 pupils from Joyful
International school, Kalol. For collecting the necessary data of independent variables (i)
Data sheet and (ii) Socio-Economical status scale prepared by R.S.Patel were used as
tools of research.
For collecting the necessary data of dependent variable ‘English Competency
development programme and test were constructed as it was not available. In order to
prepare a meaningful and useful tool, the nature and the concept of language
competency development programme and test in isolation and in an integrated relation
were defined and classified.’
