            (a) Technical Standard – Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) – An index that
indicates the Energy Efficiency of a ship in terms of CO2 generated / tonne / mile (
cargo carried) – broadly a ratio of “Environmental Cost” divided by “benefit for
            society”

            (b) Operational Measure – (SEEMP)- Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan –
mechanism for ship operators to plan, implement, monitor and review no of
efficiency measures with continuous improvement management cycles

In April 2023 IMO adopted an initial strategy on reduction of GHG emissions setting
            out three objectives
            (i) Reduce Ship Carbon intensity through EEDI

(ii) Reduce carbon intensity of international shipping (i.e. CO2 emissions per
transport work) by at least 40% in 2030 and pursuing efforts towards 70% in 2050,
            compared to 2008 levels.
(iii) Peak international shipping GHG emissions as soon as possible; reduce total
annual GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050, compared to 2008; pursue efforts to
phase out emissions (decarbonize) on a pathway of CO2 emissions reduction
consistent with the Paris Agreement temperature goals.

The IMO revised strategy adopted on 7th July 2023 is aggressive with net zero
emissions by 2050 and there remains consensus to evolve on the midterm strategy
for GHG reduction of IMO that includes the economic element – a mandatory GHG
emission pricing mechanism – as on date there are 7 different mechanisms being
grappled with – a cap and trade system, universal mandatory GHG levels – a
            Sustainability and reward fund etc.
By 2030, Zero-emission Vessels (ZEVs) must become a part of the global fleet to
meet targets set out in the Paris Agreement. Stakeholders must prioritize the
development of zero carbon fuel supply chains, including ship-board solutions and
