ADAPTATION OF NOVEL INTO A FILM: ANALYSIS OF CHETAN
BHAGAT’S HALF GIRL FRIEND

Abstract :
The present study is based on content analysis which is a method for summarizing of
content by counting various aspects of the content. This enables a more objective
evaluation than comparing content based on the impressions of an audience. The
content that is analyses can be in any form to begin with, but is often converted into
written words before it is analyses. The original source can be printed publication,
broadcast programs, and recordings, the internet, or live situation.
The present study has attempted to find out the differences between the novel of
ChetanBhagat’s Half Girlfriend and film Half Girlfriend. The first chapter gives a detailed
introduction of ChetanBhagat as a novelist, his works, his achievements and major
themes in novels it also presents the summary of the novel Half Girlfriend. The second
chapter deals with the Literature review, in which researcher has reviewed a total of nine
types of research including dissertation and research papers out of which two researches
are International, four are National and three are state-level studies. A literature review
has helped the researcher to find a research gap. The third chapter ‘Adaptation: A
Theoretical Perspective’ has provided a complete information of adaptation. It has also
described in detail the differences between the novel and the film and has offered a brief
overview of the specific critical approaches that are applied to analyzing literature to film
adaptation. The fourth chapter also highlights on the comparative technique to observe
the novels and films. Parameters of film adaptation like theme, structure, plot and story,
costume, point of view, settings, beginning and ending, left out scenes, comparable
scenes have been considered to analyse the connection among the novel and the film.
This has helped the researcher to discover whether or not the film-makers succeeded in
preserving the message of the authentic source even as adapting the radical into.
ChetanBhagat focuses on the various types of relationships and their problems such as
love relationships, husband-wife relationships, mother-son relationships, friendship,
politicians, and masses. Along with the love relationship of the Madhav and Riya, the
novel deals with very new issues of the Indian village’s school’s condition and their
parent’s mentality towards education. Madhav tries to change the condition of the school
and provides basic facilities to the student and gets success in developing a positive
attitude towards education in the mind of villagers.
