Abstract :
Radio over fiber is an objectively ideal technology for the integration of wired and wireless
networks as it combines best attributes of two common communication methodologies.
It offers mobility to the end-users in terms of to be free from the restrictions of a physical
link to a network which is a negative of conventional fiber optic networks. It also offers
abundant bandwidth which satisfies customer needs for the use of bandwidth hungry
applications, where the bandwidth provided by wireless networks could be a substantial
bottleneck [63]. ROF link based systems offer advantages like rapid and cost effective
deployment of micro or pico cellular architectures in their wireless networks and its
usability in dynamic environments due to its centralized processing and adaptive radio
environment. It also chains propagation of several RF subcarriers simultaneously due to
abundant bandwidth of optical fiber networks. Lower cost ROF elements with enhanced
working performance are due to the recent maturity in microwave photonic technology. In
addition, further reduction in deployment cost of such systems also possible due to use
of existing dim or partly used optical fibers already deployed in urban areas along with its
roads and railway tracks. It in turn helps to bring down CAPEX of such systems [63], [64].
Several identified research priorities should be attended in order to improve capabilities,
robustness and cost effectiveness of such RoF based networks. The requirement of
applications such as rich multimedia, HDTV data and etc; with low power and low cost
are fundamental reasons behind the integration of wireless and wired domains using RoF
based system. It is because it offers high data rate transmission with low power
consumption at lower cost. The integration aims to make the networks more transparent,
dynamic, faster and greener [63]. Literature survey noticed that ever-increasing need of
huge bandwidth for bandwidth hungry applications like live streaming of data, transfer of
high definition photos-videos, use of smart phones and HDTV etc. enlightened area of
ROF technology for the research purpose. Even more, ROF technology helps to achieve
comparatively high bandwidth via wireless channels in communication systems
developed for even long reach. This helps to provide reliable services to users located
even in remote and dead zone locations where conventional systems fail for the same
purpose. To accomplish the need of increasing data transmission capacity of ROF
systems, the wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) technique tied up with them; so
